DENTON, TX (KNTU) The game had been talked about before the season ever started. Known to locals as the Crosstown Showdown, two of Dallas/Fort Worth’s top teams squared off in the final district matchup of the ’09 season. Undefeated Denton Guyer, the area’s top ranked team, and Denton Ryan, the area’s 5th ranked team, did not disappoint. Two of the most prolific offenses in Texas battled for either a share of District 5-4A or an outright district title. An outright title was on the line for Guyer since it had already knocked off Lake Dallas and had its sight set on a perfect 10-0 regular season.
In the end it would be Ryan who came away with the victory 50-29. The first half started out as a defensive chess match with both teams combining for 5 punts. Guyer scored first on its first possession from scrimmage on a 9 yard touchdown run by J.W. Walsh. Guyer’s defense managed to sack Ryan quarterback Scotty Young on his first two possessions resulting in 3 and outs. It would be the last 3 and out for Ryan. Young threw 2 touchdowns in the second quarter and went into the locker room with a 22-21 advantage. The third quarter was where the game was won for Ryan. Young came out on fire tacking on 3 more touchdowns for Ryan in its first three possessions including a 56 yard bomb to Bud Sasser. The turning point in the game came late in the third quarter when Guyer’s defense was penalized several times, the final blow resulting in the ejection of Taylor Bible, the anchor of Guyer’s defensive line. Kaylon Alexander put the finishing touches on the upset for Ryan in the fourth quarter with a 39 yard touchdown. Alexander finished the game with 146 rushing yards on 14 carries, only the second time Guyer has allowed a player to rush for 100 yards this season. Ryan and Guyer both have 9-1 records and will share the district title with Lake Dallas if Lake Dallas defeats The Colony. A win by The Colony clinches the title for Ryan. The bi-district playoff matches are set for next week: Guyer will play Boswell at Dragon Stadium in Southlake and Ryan will take on Saginaw at Justin Northwest. Both games are slated for Thursday night.
