DENTON, TX (KNTU) North Texas took on the Newman Jets in their second exhibition game, bouncing back from the tough defeat against Texas Woman’s University by winning 88-57.

Niq’ky Hughes pitched in with a game-high 26 points in just 21 minutes of action, Tamara Torru had 12 points and Chynna Burwell finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

The downfall for the Mean Green in the game against TWU was getting off to a slow start, but they made sure to come out strong this game, taking a 44-36 lead into halftime.

They held the Jets to just over 38 percent shooting on the night, and also forced a lopsided 42 turnovers. Heidi Leinberger and Melanie Brockleman each turned the ball over eight times for Newman.

Brockleman had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Leinberger had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mean Green outscored Newman 44-21 in the second half, using strong full-court pressure to force turnovers. North Texas scored nearly half of their points off turnovers, with 43 points in the game coming off of Newman mistakes.

North Texas had a tough time at the line despite winning by 31 points. As a team, they shot 23-43 from the line, good enough for 53.5% for the contest.

Hughes and the Mean Green play in their first regular season game this Saturday in Nacogdoches against Stephen F. Austin.
