88.1 The One is proud to keep Jazz alive and on the air! From the swing days of big bands, to the improvisation roots of bebop, to the eclectic stylings of fusion and free jazz, you'll find a bit of it all on KNTU. As the radio station's major format since the mid-1980s, KNTU presents selections from a collection of more than 10,000 CDs. You'll hear tunes from the classics (Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and more) to today's stars. Invented by African Americans in New Orleans, Jazz began as a blend of African rhythms, work songs and field hollers, mixed with New Orleans parade, marching, and funeral music styles, plus a bit of European harmonic and melodic ideas. |
